I investigate what "public space" means for human society,
and how we can conceive a better one for future.
I am a sociologist.
Currently, I especially look at how digital technology (un)makes public spaces, and user's "art of not being governed" by various controls. My recent project looks into how queer social media users manipulate algorithmic recommendations on social media in China.
In the past, I have done fieldwork in physical public spaces, such as vendor's wisdom to appropriate a demolished wet market in Shanghai, following more or less "traditional" urban sociological approaches.
I do social good through journalism + design thinking.
Mirroring sociology stuff, I create content and design meaningful experiences for social impact. My words, podcast, and videos appeared on SixthTone, PragueCast, RADII (it's fun), among others.
My passion for "public space" emerged since my PEER Fellowship in a rural high school in central China. There, I operated an in-school education innovation hub and civic engagement center. My media literacy education project has also got featured and awarded for a Humanity in Action Fellowship.
Doing activism on the ground with limited resources has trained me to be versatile. My role there was similar to that of a program manager, but who must also design, implement, and iterate programs while working with multiple stakeholders.
